Manual for psimpoll and pscomb

Menu

Menu I: labelling

This menu has allows access to different headings depening on the settings from menu L, affecting items e, f, g, h ,i. The default, below, shows the menu with default settings in menu L (i.e. plotting by depth). The alternatives appear if plotting against age menu La by radiocarbon dates or by calibrated dates menu Li. These must be set first to give access to the appropriate headings here.

9 Leave this menu
Adds or modifies pieces of text around the diagram. All are printed in the same font and at the same size as taxa names. All text on the diagram can be controlled by the user, either through input within any of the input files or from this menu. All characters alphabet are available, plus the Greek alphabet. The following characters may be used to achieve useful effects in any label (including text read from input files):
_
Use to mark sections (beginning and [optionally] end) of a section of text that you wish to appear in oblique style. The default font at the start of printing each label is roman style, and this default comes into effect for each one: there is therefore no need to cancel the oblique style at the end of a label, (e.g., `_Betula');
{}
Use to bracket any piece of text that should appear as a superscript;
[]
Use to bracket any piece of text that should appear as a subscript;
\
Use to modify the preceding character with a following character, to enable use of accented characters and a few special characters (see Table). These characters should cover all those used by European languages: please inform KDB of any missing characters that should be included;
@
Use to bracket sections of text that should appear with Symbol encoding (see Technical matters). This is intended to enable the use of Greek characters, but may be useful for certain other effects. Equivalence between lower case plain text characters and the Greek alphabet is shown in a separate Table. Other symbols are also available, including mathematical symbols, arrows, etc., and these can be included by entering codes directly: see Table;
#
Switches font to normal size, roman style. Used (automatically) between title and subtitle in psimpoll, but may be useful in pscomb titles to produce the same effect;
$
Use to include the name of the main input file within a label. I like this incorporated in the subtitle (I1) for test plots;
|
Use to include the time and date within a label. I like this incorporated in the subtitle (I1) for test plots.
The labels that can be modified are:
Ia
Text at base of diagram e.g., `Percentages of total ...'. Default is `%' for percentage diagrams, but nothing for other types of plot;
Ib
Subtitle, appended to the main title. Default is nothing;
Ic
Labelling for column of zonation (if any), printed centrally, at the same angle as for taxa names. Default is nothing;
Id
Labelling for dendrogram produced by CONISS or CONIIC (if any), printed centrally, at the same angle as for taxa names. Default is nothing;
Ie
Labelling for column of sediment stratigraphy (if any), printed centrally, at the same angle as for taxa names. Default is nothing;
If
Labelling for column with radiocarbon ages (if any), printed centrally, at the same angle as for taxa names. Defaults depend upon settings in menu L:
La = `off'; second character of code on fourth input line is not `a';
No value (unused)
La = `on' or second character of code on fourth input line is `a'; Li = `off'; Lh = `off'
Default `{14}C ages (yr BP)' (which prints with a superscripted `14').
La = `on' or second character of code on fourth input line is `a'; Li = `off'; Lh = `on'
Default `{14}C ages (yr AD/BC)' (which prints with a superscripted `14').
La = `on' or second character of code on fourth input line is `a'; Li = `on'; Lh = `off'
Default `Cal. ages (yr BP)'.
La = `on' or second character of code on fourth input line is `a'; Li = `on'; Lh = `on'
Default `Cal. ages (yr AD/BC)'.
Ig
First line of label for age-depth column printed centrally and horizontally. Defaults depend upon settings in menu L:
La = `off'; Li = `off'
Depends upon the second character of code on fourth input line:
a
`Age';
d, m
`Depth';
s
`Sample';
f
`Cycles';
t
Default is no label;
La = `on'; Li = `off' or 'on'; Lh = `off' or 'on'
Default `Age'.
Ih
Second line of label for age-depth column printed centrally and horizontally. Defaults depend upon settings in menu L:
La = `off'; Li = `off'
Depends upon the second character of code on fourth input line:
a
`yr BP' or yr AD/BC, depending on whether AD/BC option has been selected (see menu Lh);
d
`cm';
f
`kyr{-1}' (prints with superscripted '-1')';
m
`m';
s, t
Default is no label;
La = `on'; Li = `off' or 'on'; Lh = `off'
Default `yr BP'.
La = `on'; Li = `off' or 'on'; Lh = `on'
Default `yr AD/BC'.
Ii
Labelling for time-scale column heading (if any), printed centrally, at the same angle as for taxa names. Defaults depend upon settings in menu L:
Lh = `off'
No value (unused)
Lh = `on'; Lj = `off'; Li = `off'
Default `Age ({14}C yr BP)' (which prints with a superscripted `14').
Lh = `on'; Lj = `on'; Li = `off'
Default `Age (Cal. yr BP)'
Lh = `on'; Lj = `off'; Li = `on'
Default `Age ({14}C yr AD/BC)' (which prints with a superscripted `14').
Lh = `on'; Lj = `on'; Li = `on'
Default `Age (Cal. yr AD/BC)'
Ij

Lh = `off'
No value (unused)
Lh = `on'; Lj = `off'; Li = `off'
Default `Age ({14}C yr BP)' (which prints with a superscripted `14').
Lh = `on'; Lj = `on'; Li = `off'
Default `Age (Cal. yr BP)'
Lh = `on'; Lj = `off'; Li = `on'
Default `Age ({14}C yr AD/BC)' (which prints with a superscripted `14').
Lh = `on'; Lj = `on'; Li = `on'
Default `Age (Cal. yr AD/BC)'
Ik
Labelling for y-axis of age-depth plot, printed centrally, rotated vertically. Default `Depth (cm)';
Il
Modifies the labels for the units of plots, affecting both general footnotes (menu Ia), and labelling of individual curves. After selecting this option, a submenu allows a choice of labels for modification.
